Until a Time of Plant Signals transmediates a story Lisa wrote for her project Plant Signals in the exhibition “Earthwork” at the University of Toronto Art Museum. The show presented the field notes of Lisa’s fictional character, Solis Oziban, who lives 98 years from now when corporations cease to exist; technology is adapted, repaired, repurposed, and reinvented in a solar-earthwork-punk future. Solis is on a mission to find the source of a sound –a resonance– that emanates from the north, growing day by day. Along the way, they come across overgrown saplings and shrubs, and make note of them with charcoal, graphite and bloodroot ink.
In this piece Lisa explores immersion, weaving her experience of an Anishnaabemowin language immersion class/camp with immersion into a story that is, in turn, immersed in a massively multiplayer online world. Visitors to the exhibition will follow in Solis’s virtual footsteps, hearing newly created soundscapes and interacting with the verdant environment.
